Deepwater Drilling: Where Are We Headed?--Drilling Engineering Association
Workshop
The Minerals Management Service co-sponsored the 2003 Drilling
Engineering Association Workshop, “Deepwater Drilling: Where Are We
Headed.” The workshop explored the technical gaps that must be surmounted to
advance from exploration drilling in ultra deepwater (7,500 feet-plus
water depths) to routine development. Sessions explored topics on
drilling vessels, tubulars, annular flow, wellbore stability and well
control. The event featured industry panel discussions that
reviewed the information presented, and subsequent breakout sessions
drew conclusions on the work necessary to move forward. The Workshop was
sponsored by the MMS, US Department of Energy, International Association
of Drilling Contractors, Gas Technology Institute, Petroleum Technology
Transfer Council, and the Energy Research Clearinghouse.
