Project Number 641
Date of Summary March 11, 2010
Subject Seawater Corrosion of Rope & Chain (SCORCh)
Performing Activity AMOG Consulting
Principal Investigator Dr. Emmanuel Fontaine
Contracting Agency Minerals Management Service
Estimated Completion July 31, 2012
Description

The objective of the JIP is to provide:

  •  Design guidance on the specification of wire ropes and chains to maximize their design service life for the particular site conditions, in particular in tropical waters.

  • Design analytical tool, underpinned by field and test data, to estimate the design service life of steel wire mooring ropes and chains for the particular site conditions.
Progress The Kick-off meeting was held in November 2009 at the FPSO Research Forum in San Francisco. Discussions during the KO meeting resulted in a new agreement as to the size and composition of field test samples. Reworking the scope of work to incorporate full scale samples led the contractor to re-shape the testing program as well as a six-month delay to allow for a uniform field installation process.
