Technology Assessment & Research (TA&R) Program
Project Number 628
Date of Summary March 30, 2009
Subject Assess the Design/Inspection Criteria/Standards for Wave and/or Current Energy Generating Devices
Performing Activity Free Flow Energy, Inc.
Principal Investigator Aiman Alawa, Ph.D.
Contracting Agency Minerals Management Service
Completed March 27, 2009
Description Free Flow Energy performed a gap analysis to determine if modifications should be made to engineering specifications and regulatory standards to enable the placement of wave and current energy devices within the outer continental shelf (OCS) without compromising safety and performance guidelines.

The following tasks were accomplished:

Task 1. Acquire basic engineering information and generate a list of engineering concerns.

Task 2. Address safety and regulatory concerns and generate a checklist for the complete spectrum of unique safety concerns.

Task 3. Offer recommendations on research programs to fill in gaps in regulatory/design standards and to address problem areas encountered during the development of wave and current energy generating devices.

Task 4. Prepare a draft report and establish dialogue with MMS and other external sources to discuss findings.

Task 5. Assess/develop inspection methodologies for offshore wave and/or current energy generating devices.
