Summer Breeze Daily Reports - June 28, 2005

SWSS Logotype

Position at 27.50  89.38

A day of monitoring, without hearing any sperm whales. The weather wasn’t favorable either, with strong winds and frequent drizzle. Today we reached the western end of our survey area and began tracking in an easterly direction. The day wasn’t completely without high points, though. We encountered a small group of melon-headed whales who weren’t really interested in our boat and disappeared quickly again. We also had successful fishing: we caught two perfectly sized mahi-mahi, which were a welcome addition for our dinner.

Since four o’clock local time we are tracking a single sperm whale, whose clicks we picked up around 3:30. Unfortunately, the whale went quiet approximately half an hour after we heard the clicks first. We are hoping to be able to hear him or her again when the clicking resumes.
