MMS AND NORWAY WORK TOGETHER ON OIL AND GAS RESOURCES
Today, the Department of the Interior's Minerals Management Service (MMS) and the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) of the Kingdom of Norway signed a Memorandum of Understanding concerning scientific and technical cooperation related to offshore oil, gas, and mineral resources. The agreement strengthens the capabilities of both agencies with the management, exploration, and development of their respective offshore oil, gas, and mineral resources.
"This MOU highlights the international leadership roles that the United States and Norway have assumed in developing sound policies and procedures for the environmentally sound and safe development of offshore oil and gas resources," remarked MMS Director Cynthia Quarterman.
On behalf of Norway, Mr. Magne Ognedal noted, "The international nature of the offshore oil and gas industry necessitates close cooperation with other government regulators. We are pleased to be able to continue to cooperate with the MMS and in doing so strengthen the policies and practices of both Government agencies."
For the past five years, the MMS and NPD have exchanged information on the management of offshore oil and gas resources. The agencies have discussed the international applicability of certain regulations, environmental protection measures, royalty management, and safety policies and practices.
