MMS PRESENTS AMOCO WITH CARE AWARD(#30041) FOR RELEASE: September 15, 1993 CONTACT: Tom DeRocco (202) 208-3983 or Barney Congdon (504) 736-2595 MINERALS MANAGEMENT SERVICE PRESENTS AMOCO WITH CONSERVATION AWARD FOR RESPECTING THE ENVIRONMENT (#30041) The Interior Department's Minerals Management Service (MMS) has selected the New Orleans Offshore Business Unit of Amoco Production Company as the 1993 recipient of the Conservation Award for Respecting the Environment (CARE Award). MMS Director Tom Fry presented the 1993 CARE Award to Clive Fowler, Vice- President of Amoco's Offshore Business Unit, during the Western Gulf of Mexico Natural Gas and Oil Lease Sale 143 held today in New Orleans. "Amoco's management and employees working in the Gulf of Mexico region are being commended for Gulf-wide leadership in reducing the risk of solid waste disposal from offshore petroleum operations," said Fry. "Their management philosophy incorporates environmental concern into daily decisions. In addition, Amoco has provided exemplary and generous support for coastal and offshore conservation programs and projects that is likely to have a major impact on the long term survival and enjoyment of our marine and coastal fish and wildlife resources. Wherever they do business in the Gulf region, Amoco is a respected corporate leader and welcome partner in the development, management, and conservation of natural resources." Some of Amoco's achievements, which exceeded environmental and regulatory requirements, include the following: ø Organized and led a committee of drillers, producers, suppliers and transporters to identify improved waste stream management policies and practices, then challenged all offshore operators to make voluntary operational changes to further eliminate, reduce or recycle solid waste. ø Incorporated numerous examples of innovative oil and filter conservation techniques into daily offshore operations. ø Helped The Nature Conservancy initiate land purchases in Louisiana, then cooperated with them in Louisiana and Texas in establishing coastal refuge, research and environmental education centers. These centers will encourage the investigation of coastal ecology and natural diversity, while focusing on protecting and monitoring declining populations of neotropical birds, especially those migrating across the Gulf of Mexico coastal region. ø Encouraged and assisted the state of Louisiana in the planning and establishment of its Rigs-to-Reefs program. ø Demonstrated longstanding exemplary marsh management and wetland restoration practices on company-owned lands in southwest Louisiana, with the dedication of 9,000 acres to cooperative public management and refuge status in support of the North American Waterfowl Management Plan. ø Implemented a comprehensive environmental training and awareness program, consistently achieving pollutant discharge levels beyond compliance requirements, and providing financial incentives and recognition to employees and management for conservation achievement. ø Encouraged and assisted the communities where Amoco employees work and live in developing environmental conservation, education and enhancement programs. Established by MMS in 1987, the CARE Award Program recognizes outstanding environmental accomplishments by companies involved in offshore natural gas, oil, and sulphur operations in the Gulf of Mexico. Amoco was nominated for this award by their New Orleans Offshore Business Unit, the Louisiana Nature Conservancy, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the Louisiana Landowners Association, the Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil & Gas Association, and Ducks Unlimited.
