Gulf of
Mexico Region Spills ≥ 50 Barrels (2,100 gallons) 1983 January 20, 1983 - Texaco, Inc.
Remarks: A submerged oil pipeline was pulled apart by a mud slide approximately 500' from "A" platform. Bad weather with high winds and rough seas preceded the mud slide. Response: the two safety couplings were replaced along with 500' of pipe. January 30, 1983 - The Superior Oil Company
Remarks: 800 bbl of 85 ppg oil-based mud with 90 viscosity were pumped overboard while being offloaded to the barge. Apparently the hose parted but was not observed until after the mud had gone overboard. A barge with a vacuum cleaned up the residue. February 1, 1983 -
Remarks: A pollution incident occurred causing a 50-200 barrel oil spill when a transfer hose ruptured. March 9, 1983 - CNG Producing Company
Remarks: EXPLORATION SPILL. While pumping 17.1 ppg oil base mud from the supply vessel to the rig, rig crew members at the mud pits saw there were no returns. They had the vessel crew stop the mud transfer pump. The 3" Evertite coupling was disconnected below the surface of the water. It is likely that the safety wire which prevents the connection from coming apart either failed or was not installed. Response: coupling was reconnected. Spilled 100 bbl of Invermul oil base mud (23% water, 77% diesel), or equivalent to a 77 bbl diesel spill. March 20, 1983 - Exxon Corporation
Remarks: EXPLORATION SPILL. The workboat was tied up at the jack-up rig unloading cement and H2O. The workboat's anchor chain broke allowing the boat to drift over into the leg of the jack-up, knocking a hole in the fuel tank. April 14, 1983 - Shell Offshore, Inc.
Remarks: A diesel hose parted while offloading diesel from the workboat to a drilling rig allowing diesel to spill into Gulf waters. No pollution was detected in the waters the next morning, so 200 bbl may be an overestimate of the spill size. May 9, 1983 - CNG Producing Company
Remarks: While pumping oil-base mud from a supply vessel to the rig, the 3" Everlite coupling disconnected. This allowed 100 bbl of oil-base mud (77% oil) to be pumped overboard, so 77 bbl diesel spilled. May 16, 1983 - Atlantic Richfield Company
Remarks: A workboat hit one of the rig's legs at midnight. There was a hole in the boat's fuel tank. The diesel spill dissipated during the night in heavy seas. August 2, 1983 - Kerr-McGee Corporation
Remarks: Motor vessel accidentally bumped platform while unloading equipment, puncturing the fuel tank. Privacy | Disclaimers | Accessibility | Topic Index | FOIA Last Updated: 06/24/08, 02:42 PM |
