Social Science in MMS

Invitation

1999 Social and Economic Planning Conference

You are invited to attend the Minerals Management Service Social and Economic Planning Conference in Park City Utah, August 24-26, 1999. To carry out its responsibilities for managing the country’s Outer Continental Shelf oil, gas and mineral resources the Minerals Management Service depends on sound social and economic research. This conference will bring together a select group of social scientists with expertise in matters vital to the mission of the Minerals Management Service.

The three days of the conference will include presentations from Minerals Management Service social scientists and prominent scientists from universities and the private sector, roundtable discussions on regional research needs, and opportunities for informal discussion among participants. A final report on the conference proceedings and conclusions will be provided to all participants.

We have reserved a block of rooms at one of Park City’s well-appointed hotels and conference centers, The Inn at Prospector Square ($71/night for a studio and $79/night for a studio loft, excluding taxes). Conference participants will be responsible for making their own reservations. Please call the Inn (435-649-7100) to make your reservations no later than July 2, 1999 and specify that you are registering for the Minerals Management Service conference. (Cancellations must be made 45 days prior to scheduled arrival. The Minerals Management Service will be charged for late cancellations or other alterations in dates of stay and will have to pass these charges along to those who incur them). There is no registration fee for the conference.

We need your assistance in this important endeavor. The conference discussions should be of great interest to anyone concerned with the vital role that social and economic research will play in managing the country’s offshore oil, gas and mineral resources for years to come. Please let us know by May 15 if you will be able to join us. I encourage you to explore this website for background information on the conference and to learn more about social science at the MMS.

If you have questions about the goals of the conference, please get in touch with me at 703-787-1087 or rodney.cluck@mms.gov. If you have questions about lodging or other logistical matters, please contact Phyllis Clark at 703-787-1716 or phyllis.clark@mms.gov.

Sincerely,

Dr. Rodney E. Cluck, Sociologist Environmental Studies Program
