Protected
Species Studies in MMS
WHY? Established in the 1970s , the
Environmental Studies Program is a highly focused marine research program that is designed
to provide the environmental information necessary for informed decisions on OCS energy
and nonenergy mineral planning and development activities.
WHAT? The MMS has funded or conducted
in-house studies on large cetaceans, dolphins, sea turtles, seabirds and coastal
waterfowl, fish and polar bears.
WHERE? Through the Studies Program
located in our 3 regional offices in Metarie, Louisiana; Camarillo, California; and
Anchorage, Alaska MMS addresses marine mammal, seabird, turtle an fish issues related to
oil and gas activities in the OCS along the contiguous U.S. coastline.
HOW? A national studies list (NSL) of
reviewed and approved studies for funding is compiled each year by the 3 regional offices
and headquarters. In addition, unsolicited proposals are routinely received from outside
the agency.
