Oil Spill Preparedness

The majority of activities undertaken by MMS during the regulation and oversight of oil and gas exploration, development, and production operations in the OCS are devoted to spill prevention. MMS is responsible for verifying that operators of facilities that handle, store, transport or produce oil from facilities located not only in the OCS but also in state waters are capable of responding to spills from their facilities, whether the spill constitutes a minor event or is characterized as their worst case discharge scenario
