Offshore Minerals Management has developed the Career
Development Intern Program (CDIP) to recruit outstanding entry-level
professional candidates and to give them the understanding of various
aspects of OMM mandates, the web of professional relationships, and the
experience in different functions they may need to begin working immediately
on any of a wide variety of assignments as impending retirements create
critical needs in Headquarters divisions.
A Career Development internship will last for 1-3 years.
During this time each intern will work for a specified Headquarters division
located in Herndon, Virginia. He/she will also spend time in other divisions
and in the regional offices. The regional offices are located in New
Orleans, Louisiana; Camarillo, California; and Anchorage, Alaska.
Some internship experiences will have immediate relevance;
others may not seem as helpful until later in a former intern’s career. As a
small agency with a fairly wide range of functions, MMS needs and values
employees who are willing and able to function in different roles as their
careers progress.
Within the intern’s first 60 days in this program, the
intern and his/her mentor will develop an Individual Development Plan (IDP).
The IDP will map out the intern’s career goals, training needs and
rotational assignments. There will be numerous opportunities for rotational
assignments. These will include:
 |
assignments in at least
two HQ offices other than the employee’s base office, lasting one to
four months |
 |
an assignment in the
Gulf of Mexico OCS Regional Office, lasting 3-4 months |
 |
assignments lasting at least 1 week in each of the other regional
offices, with specific assignments to shadow regional employees, to
participate in HQ-Regional meetings, and/or to participate in regional
office work projects |
There may also be opportunities for visits to lease sales
(auctions of oil and gas rights) both in the Gulf of Mexico and the Alaska
OCS regions, to an offshore oil/gas platform, and to an active sand dredge
operation.
Each intern will be hired as a probationary, career
conditional (“permanent”) employee at the GS-5,
GS-7, or GS-9 level, depending on her/his qualifications, in a
suitable series for which each individual is qualified. These positions have
the non-competitive potential to the GS-12 level.
