Area Information

The U.S. Minerals Management Service headquarters is located in the town of Herndon, Virginia, which has been described by the Wall Street Journal as the third highest “boom town” in the United States. This reputation is due to the town’s remarkable growth over the last decade, as several internet technology firms have made Herndon their place to do business.

Herndon is just minutes away from Washington, DC, and its many attractions. The Smithsonian Museums, historical monuments, and outdoor recreational spots are all nearby. Herndon’s proximity to Dulles International Airport makes it an ideal travel destination.

Outdoor entertainment arenas, such as Wolf Trap Farm Park and the Nissan Pavilion are also nearby, offering a wide variety of cultural events. The town also offers several annual festivals including the Herndon Festival the first week of June, a Blues Festival in July, a Jazz Festival & Wine Tasting on Labor Day, and a Fall Fun Festival in September. The Herndon Festival, which draws 90,000 people or more over 4 days, features a variety of music playing concurrently on 2-3 stages, as well as booths, exhibits, and rides.  Free outdoor concerts are held 1 or 2 nights a week throughout the summer, along with numerous other events throughout the year.  See the Herndon Council for the Arts and the Elden Street Players for other cultural activities in Herndon.

Herndon has a wide variety of recreational amenities, with over nine parks, the Herndon Community Center, the Herndon Centennial Golf Course, and access to the W&OD Bike Trail. The town also boasts more than 100 restaurants, offering food from around the world, as well as 15 hotels.
