Kids Corner - Offshore Oil and Gas Platform
Offshore platforms are usually constructed from steel, but sometimes they can be built of concrete. When most of the oil has been recovered, the offshore platform is removed. Some are taken to shore to be dismantled and recycled. Others are converted into artificial reefs to enhance fishing. Many people work on offshore platforms including welders, mechanics, electricians, engineers, and drilling and production specialists. On some platforms you may also find cooks, firefighters, computer technicians, radio operators and even helicopter pilots. Working on a platform is like working on a ship.
