| Beluga whales swimming in the open ocean.
Belugas are very talkative. They communicate using grunts, chirps, clicks, and
whistles. They are also known as "sea canaries." Two populations of belugas live
in Alaskan waters. One group lives in Cook Inlet and one group lives in the western Arctic
waters of the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort Seas. Adult male belugas range in length from
11 to 16 feet and weigh 1,000 to 2,000 pounds. Females are smaller, reaching about 12 feet
in length. |
